The Opening Meeting of the 250th Session will be held on the 30th of October in the GMB Chamber. This event, traditionally the first time the Auditor address the members, is a highlight of the College calendar and an important occasion for all Hist members. Medals of the Society are awarded for outstanding achievements made since the previous year and recently graduated members are ceremonially elected to Honorary Membership. The event is also an excellent opportunity to meet alumni and friends who maintain an active connection with the Society. Hist HonMems go on to have illustrious careers in politics, law, finance, and academia— the Opening Meeting is an excellent opportunity to meet this important subsection of the Hist community.
The theme of the meeting is “On Leadership in Crisis” and, through several papers delivered by esteemed guests, the Hist aims to explore the fundamental issues that have led to turbulence and tension increasing across western democracies. Indeed, Dublin, the day before the United Kingdom is set to leave the European Union, is an opportune time and place to comment on the global political climate. Brexit, whether or not it is disorderly, poses a significant threat to both the Republic and Northern Ireland.
Guest announcements will be made throughout the week and we’d encourage all members to keep this event in their diaries.
The Inaugural is the Opening Meeting of the 250th Session and is an important gathering for Hist members past and present. In previous years, formal attire was encouraged for student members, however, this year the Committee has opted to relax the dress code to be in-line with new policies aimed at improving accessibility. As such, we encourage all student members to attend wearing what they feel comfortable in to the event.
